So just what exactly is the recommended solution for people who wish to have domains that have hosted exchange/O365 for some accounts and cPanel managed POP for others?

Hello, Could you elaborate further on this configuration? For instance, are you attempting to have specific email accounts under the same domain name managed separately? Thank you.

Say I have 10 email accounts under a domain. 6 of these guys are hosted exchange/o365 users. 4 of them are POP/IMAP mail users. Hosted Exchange/O365 handles itself so long as a mail forward is sent from the cPanel Domain -> Exchange. Exchange knows to send mail to the pop users it relays it out via MX records. The problem is cPanel's Autodiscovery. It points to cPanel - both autodiscover.domain.com and an SRV record pointing to cpanel. This breaks Outlook, as Outlook periodically checks for Autodiscover updates, which then overwrites the Hosted Exchange/O365 proxy settings. Our hosting provider has cPanel's Autodiscover service tweaks turned on - we don't even see the options - so the only option to stop the service propagating to clients is to Poison their DNS via hosts/custom dns zone (autodiscover.domain.com 127.0.0.1) Alternatively we can set cPanel to "remote" under MX Entry. this stops cPanel from auto-generating the autodiscover, autoconfig and SRV records - however cPanel will not accept mail for that domain - thus the pop accounts AND the exchange forwards don't work. Currently we are investigating a VPS to get around this mess - but we're looking at literally 3x price jump to do it - just to stop Autodiscover breaking ~60 Outlook clients incredibly regularly.
