Local Mail Exchange using registrar nameserver

I currently have a setup where we use the 123-reg to configure all the DNS setup. I have added mail.mydomain.com as an A record to my server IP followed by an MX record pointing to this. However, I'm not sure this is the right URL as nothing is coming through. Could someone advise me of the best setup in this configuration? Thanks, Rich
