Forwarder - Email account over quota

Why a forwarder stop working if the email account exceed its mailbox quota?, if I increase its quota the forwarder start working again. What can I do to avoid this?

  Do you actually need to store the emails on the server? If not, just delete the mailbox itself (but keep the forwarder).
