Lots (over 16k) of "Open slot with no current process" in Apache...

Hi everyone, I noticed my server was serving much more slowly recently, with webpages taking a much longer time to load - so I took a loot at the Apache Status in my WHM control panel. There are over 16K (thousand!) <"." open slot with no current process> showing, whereas normally there would only be a few lines of these ". dots" Could this be a symptom or a clue to a cause, do you think? There are exactly 125 lines of:-

There are a few WordPress websites on the VPS server but they do not attract much traffic and all the MUNIN statistics are looking the same as normal, for the past 10 months - no obvious change is the readings etc. Nothing seems broken, all sites are functioning normally, just taking a much longer time to load.     Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help me understand where I can set (or control) the number of "Open slot with no current process" in the Apache Status information? These "open slots" are displayed as a dot <.> in the output, as you know. I have 256 lines of these dots (open slots) - whicu equates to over 16 thousand open slots - and it may be connected to a remarkanble slowing down of my server/websites??     Hi Michael, Many thanks for your reply. Yes, I have checked out these links, very interesting, but not helping with my particular query. I installed CSF a week or so ago, and all went well. It's configured to the default settings and runs well, catching repeated multiple login attempts etc. No increase in server/CPU load noted in the MUNIN stats. All seems fine with the firewall. My issue is with the many "open slots" that jumped from a nominal amount (as I had been experiencing over the months since using the VPS) to a very large amount in the past few days.     As you can see - a LOT of open slots! This is huge compared to the three or four lines of <.> dots - open slots - which I used to see every time I checked the Apache status. Do you suggest any method of investigating how there can suddenly be so many open slots? BTW: > I have restated the Apache server a many times, but no change in # of open slots. > Server load is very low. > Memory usage is still normal, no increase or decrease in past moths. > CSF installed a week ago. > No unusual DOS like activity in process or error logs. > Traffic in/out still low > mySql loads remain normal & low Is there a way to control or reduce/limit the number of open slots?     Hi again, Is there a way to control these "open slots"? The problem remains, unfortunately. CSF make no difference, although I like it and I'll keep it installed/enabled. Regards, Robin.

    I'm pretty sure these updates were cPanel driven - perhaps someone can confirm/deny - so could you please help me with investigating what has happened???? What are open slots? How can I control them, or does this really matter? Thank you. Regards, Robin.

    Hello :) The update output is from your system package manager (YUM). It's important to keep your system updated, but you can disable automatic updates via the "Operating System Package Updates" option in "WHM Home >> Server Configuration >> Update Preferences". Do you notice any error messages in /usr/local/apache/logs/error_log regarding the number of open slots, or does the issue persist when disabling the automatic updates? Thank you.
