    It shouldn't, but there should be a better defined error in /usr/local/cpanel/logs/error_log You can use:
    tail -f /usr/local/cpanel/logs/error_log
    while tailing that file, try adding the wildcard again. My thoughts are is that there is already an existing DNS entry for the wildcard so its causing an issue when cPanel tries to create the subdomain.

    The zone *.domain.com is there. It had not occured to me that the creation of the subdomain would fail because of that. Solved, thanks!
