x3 Branding 'Live Editor' giving 404 error
We have a customer that says that their branding setup was wiped out in the last cPanel update. They would have just redone their changes, but they are having trouble editing their x3 branding from WHM. I was able to replicate this issue as well when logged in as root. I'm not seeing any errors in the cPanel error_log, and have tried upcp, upcp --force, and check_cpanel_rpms --fix just to be sure. I have also replicated this issue on the trial WHM at

Make certain the account being used is configured to use X3 as its theme. If the account is configured for Paper Lantern then X3 Live Branding editor will produce a 404 error. The problem stems from how the X3 Branding Editor is designed. Also X3 is headed for retirement early next year: It"s time to say goodbye to X3 | cPanel Blog 0 -
Kenneth, Thank you very much for this information. The thing that was throwing me off was that I was logged in as root. However, when I logged in as a reseller, and set it's theme to x3, the editor did in fact come up. Thank you very much for that! Is there any option to set the root user to the x3 theme, or is it just going to remain broken for root until it's finally phased out? 0 -

More than likely root's theme is determine by the default theme setting in the Basic cPanel & WHM Setup interface in WHM. That setting is used to determine which theme to assign new accounts. It is also used as a fallback theme when an account either does not have a theme configured, or a configured theme does not exist on the server. If you need access to the X3 branding editor for the root user, I'd suggest temporarily changing the default theme in Basic cPanel & WHM Setup. I don't have access to an install at the moment to confirm that.0
