I have what I think is a related problem. I receive a lot of FAILED notices for nscd, "The service "nscd" appears to be down", and restarts, on all my servers. Is this normal?

Probably isn't the same problem.... But, until the "nscd" is a little more "implemented" with cpanel, i recommend disable it... Is not a critical service, and can be safely disabled.

We're also reciving alot of email of the service is going down/recovered all the time. Even on servers we don't have this enabled! We tested this service on our nameservers, but they only caused issues and we had to disable them.

Hello :) Could you review /var/log/lfd.log to see if it's killed by LFD if CSF/LFD is installed on your system? Thank you.

Hello :) Let us know if the issue persists after modifying /etc/nscd.conf to change the following value:
    enable-cache netgroup yes
    To:
    enable-cache netgroup no
Ensure you run "/scripts/restartsrv_nscd" after making the change. Thank you.

Hi Michael. I tried the suggested change on one of our servers (modify /etc/nscd.conf so enable-cache netgroup is 'no' instead of 'yes', then run '/scripts/restartsrv_nscd'), however the occasional nscd 'crash' still persists. We do have CSF/LFD on the server, but I checked the log you mentioned (/var/log/lfd.log) and there are no entries related to anything of interest. Any other things to try or to look at? - Scott

Internal case CPANEL-2242 is open to track reports of this problem, but there's not yet been a determination of the cause. It'd help if you could open a support ticket using the link in my signature so we could attempt to debug the issue on an affected system. You can post the ticket number here so we can update this thread with the outcome. Thank you.

Im experiencing the same issues on one of my servers, I tried disabling the enable-cache netgroup off and restarted nscd and it still doing random notifications/restarts (at a rate of like from 7 to 15 per day). Any update on the internal case bugtrack??

There's no update available at this time, but please feel free to open a support ticket and reference case CPANEL-2242 so we can review your system and add any helpful information about your environment to it. Thank you.

actually we do see something in the main log (/var/log/messages):
    root@server [~]# grep -ri 'nscd' /var/log/messages Feb 2 11:51:53 server kernel: [1522651.294024] nscd[15004]: segfault at 7f9d1d7f32e0 ip 00007f9c21260bcb sp 00007f9c11c32510 error 4 in nscd[7f9c2124d000+24000] Feb 3 12:28:55 server kernel: [1611271.474491] nscd[2937]: segfault at 7fc9ff111358 ip 00007fc9083ccbcb sp 00007fc8f8106510 error 4 in nscd[7fc9083b9000+24000] Feb 4 14:50:16 server kernel: [1706150.675226] nscd[20721]: segfault at 7fee0470b6a8 ip 00007fed0bff2bcb sp 00007fecfdbba510 error 4 in nscd[7fed0bfdf000+24000]

I've noted this forum thread in the internal case, but feel free to open a support ticket so we can review your system and add any additional notes to the case that will help narrow down the cause of the problem. Thank you.

We still get alot of emails from different server with latest version of 54 about nscd failing. And I cannot find the internal case ticket in the changelogs. When will this be fixed?

And I cannot find the internal case ticket in the changelogs.

There were no additional reports of this problem from any other users, so the case is still open. We need you to open a support ticket so we can take a closer look. Thank you.

Hi, we have the same issue, we are getting two, three times a day sometimes in a few of our servers, any hints ?

You can always disable NSCD within WHM -> Service Manager for now, especially on busy servers. It is not an essential service, and DNS works just fine with it disabled.

Have you tried the workaround suggested from NSCD Failing mentioned earlier in this thread? Thank you.

Hello, Internal case CPANEL-5693 was included in cPanel version 56.0.8 to help address this issue: Fixed case CPANEL-5693: Avoid nscd cache clear when services activate from dormancy. Could anyone using version 56 of cPanel let us know if the issue persists after the implementation of this case? Thank you.

Yes, I saw that case and it really took some time. When you mention it I can't recall that I have seen nscd the last couple of days! :) We normally get 2-10 each day from around 50 servers. I will update you if that changes.

The service nscd was apparently stalled in my case. I attempted a manual restart but it still said the service was already running. I fired 'kill -9' but it said the same thing. I then removed the socket and pid files, and fired another restart. That did the trick! /var/run/nscd/socket /var/run/nscd/nscd.pid

Hello, I've not seen any additional reports of this issue recently. What version of cPanel is installed on your system? Is it happening on a regular basis or was this an isolated incident? Thank you.
