WHM - remote mysql server version limitations?
I have setup a dedicated server for MySQL in WHM (Home >> SQL Services >> Setup Remote MySQL Server). My question is :
Are there any limitations as to what version I can install on the remote server? Right now I have mariadb 10.0 installed, but would like to install 10.1. Is this going to cause issues with the integration in whm/cpanel when setup as a remote server as far as using phpmyadmin and everything else? Same goes for installing MySQL 5.7 if I wanted to do that. I guess what I want to know is if we need to have a 'compatible' version installed on the remote server, one that is compatible with whm/cpanel in the first place, such as this wasn't a remote server, but installed on the same one using whm/cpanel. For example, that last time I checked MySQL 5.7 wasn't an option to be installed in WHM for compatibility reasons I assume (5.6 was the latest), so can it be installed on the remote server without whm/cpanel problems in the sense all the integration will still function?

Would love an answer to this. To recap, I am using a dedicated server for my databases and have setup WHM to use a remote MySQL server. On that remote server I have MariaDB installed. Will the integration with WHM work regardless of what version of MariaDB is installed? I would like to install 10.1.9. I realize I can install whatever I want on the remote server... it is the integration with WHM since it is setup for remote MySQL which is what concerns me / has me worried. 0 -
Hello :) The manipulation of databases (e.g. creation, removal) is tested against versions of MySQL and MariaDB that are supported by cPanel. Thus, it's likely a good idea to use a version that's supported by cPanel. That being said, you are welcome to experiment with a newer version of MySQL or MariaDB on the remote server. I'm not aware of any existing issues, but it's a good idea to test this on a non-production environment first. Thank you. 0 -
Is there somewhere I can find the currently supported versions of MySQL / MariaDB? Once you setup WHM to use a remote database basically all references to it are removed... in other words there is nowhere in WHM which says what the current version of either is. 0 -
The following versions of MySQL are supported: MySQL 5.5 MySQL 5.6 The following versions of MariaDB are supported: MariaDB 10.0 MariaDB 10.1 Thank you. 0 -

Thanks for the response! Is there a link or somewhere which I can reference in the future to find this information... as well as what versions of WHM/Cpanel support them?0 -

This is documented at: MySQL/MariaDB Upgrade - Documentation - cPanel Documentation However, note that MariaDB 10.1 support was recently added. Thank you.0
