Index does not open properly

I have an index.html for my site but i keep getting a index of/ instead of it showing the index.html page. i type mydomain.com and get an index of / page instead of it showing index.html

  Hello :) Could you let us know the contents of your /home/$username/public_html/.htaccess file? Ensure you remove any actual domain names or IP addresses. Thank you.
