MySQLserver through socket

When we restart mysql we are getting the following error: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQLserver through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' Any ideas?

  Hello :) Could you let us know the output to /var/lib/mysql/$hostname.err when attempting to restart MySQL? Thank you.

  Hi Michael, You are a star sir... any help as we are tearing our hair out. I think we have an issue with some corruption but we can't get it started to start the repair.

  we did innodb_force_recovery which worked. we then restarted and took the line out and i came up with the same errors.
