    Hello and thank you for your help with this. I asked cPanel for support who were very helpful. It turns out that the issue was to do with NFS file locking, after remounting the nfs partition with nolock - the backups worked perfectly. It is a little strange as we do have 6 cPanel servers and the issue only effected 2 of them but backup's were setup identically.
