password protected directory not working in nginx reverse proxy

I wish to protect my public_html directory from public. I have tried password protected directory option in cPanel but it doesn't work. I believe it is due to nginx is setup as reverse proxy. Can somebody suggest a way to achieve this.

  Hello, Could you let us know the specific entries added to the .htaccess file within the account's public_html directory? Also, have you verified the domain name resolves to the cPanel server? Thank you.
