Moving to new server, how to manage my nameservers?
Hi all,
I'm giving myself a headache trying to make sure I get this right - it's been a long time since I set up the current configuration so trying to re-learn everything I've forgotten.
I've got a WHM server (S1) with a couple dozen accounts. S1 is NS1. Also have an additional DNS only server (S2), which is NS2.
S1 (root) has DNS cluster enabled, set to write-only to NS2.
S1 is dying and to be decommissioned. So, enter the shiny new S3. New WHM install on CloudLinux (nice).
What I'm unclear on is what my workflow is for moving accounts - I'm doing them manually as most of them are having various other maintenance / upgrade tasks with it and using the opportunity to clear out a load of junk / legacy accounts etc.
So:
1) On S3, Bind is enabled, and at the bottom of basic config I declare a new nameserver, NS3. Assign IP and it gets it's own correctly.
2) On S1 cPanel, I add an A zone for ns3.mydomain.com. with S3's IP.
3) I declare NS3 to the domain registrar with S3's IP.
4) Add NS3 to the cluster run on S1. Write only again? Not sure.
5) Create accounts, copy data + databases etc onto S3.
Now I'm not sure how I:
a) Correctly edit / change / move the domains? A records or change to NS3? Do I manually recreate all the zone entries that have been done in cPanel on S1 for each domain or do they propagate by adding NS3 to the cluster?
b) Down NS1, rename NS3 to NS1 without having to change all domain records?
c) More things I'm sure I haven't thought of / worked out. Headache ensues.
Any guidance on correct way forward with this would be much appreciated.

Hello, The following thread is a good place to start: [Tutorial] Nameserver configuration on cPanel servers In addition, these documents explain how to setup a DNS cluster: Guide to DNS Cluster Configurations - cPanel Knowledge Base - cPanel Documentation As far as the transfer, creating the account on the new server will automatically ensure it's zone is synced through the cluster because you are using "Write Only". However, is there any reason you are not using the "Transfer Tool" option in Web Host Manager to copy the accounts? Thank you. 0 -

Ok plan has been made thanks to the help from the cPanel ticket guys. ns3 on s3, not clustered move accounts, databases and files (not using the transfer tool as using this as an opportunity to clean out a load of crap). change IP of ns1 to s3 configure clustering with s3 as write-only to ns2 and force and update. Only thing we need to do before hand is check for any dns records that reference s1's ip rather than ns1. Tidy those up if there are any and we're good to go. 0 -
