Email addressed to user@domain was always delivered to his cpanel username.

I would think ANYUSER@domain was always being delivered to his cPanel username as well. Creating the account as he did is the best way to go. He can always login as the cPanel user and select that email account to send with, from there. There's a link to login as the cPanel user at bottom of the Email Accounts page. The default email account is used to catch mail that is unrouted. The username and password of the default account is the same as your cPanel account login. The default account cannot be deleted and has no quota.

Hi uses IMAP and all of his folders and previous email is in the main cpanel user account. He would like to go back to using just that account.

Please check to make sure you don't have a left over or invalid folder for user@domain.com in /home/CPANELUSER/mail/DOMAIN/USER If you do, moving it away should prevent the system from detecting it as a mail account and trying to deliver mail to it.

The user previously had email delivered to /home/user/mail/new. After the update to 11.58 this error message appeared and the user was not receiving email: 2016-08-18 11:10:27 1baOxe-001ssg-OU ** user@domain.com R=virtual_user T=dovecot_virtual_delivery: LMTP error after RCPT TO:: 550 5.1.1 User doesn't exist: user@domain.com The user had to create an email account in cPanel in order to resume delivery of his email.

The user had to create an email account in cPanel in order to resume delivery of his email.

An unnecessary directory likely existed for the affected email account at the following location: /home/$cpanel-username/mail/$domain.com/$email-username/ The existence of such a directory can result in "User doesn't exist" error messages if no corresponding email account exists on the system. Manually creating an email account for the affected user or removing the offending directory are both effective workarounds. Thank you.
