UPDATE I downloaded the backup my web host did on the server. I unzipped it with no problem. It seems there must be an issue initiating cpanel backup remotely.

Hello, Please report this issue to your web hosting provider so they can take a closer look to determine why backups generated from the cPanel interface are not downloading correctly. It's not something you will be able to troubleshoot directly without root access to the system. Thank you.

My web host refuse to accept that it is the cpanel backup process that stops half way and keep insisting it is my browser, despite my having tried more than one browser, despite it only ever happens on this backup, nothing else this size ever fails. Can you suggest what they might look for?

You might want to take that backup with you to your next Hosting Provider. ;)

Finally, the backup is working. It was timing out because the (shared) server was overloaded!! They moved me to a new server..........
