Brute force attacks question

Hello, I'm new here and I've had a look around but could really find an answer. Yesterday I installed a brand new copy of cpanel and within an hour my server started getting attacked with brute force attempts. I've changed all the passwords just to be sure, but how is it possible for it to happen that quick of a brand new server being installed? Is there anything I can do to stop the attempts?
