When I try to telnet to a gmail server on port 110 or 26 I also get a "Connection timed out" error even though those ports are open in my firewall. My host blocks port 25 by default so I am trying to use port 26 and have changed the setting in WHM's Tweak Settings accordingly.

Hello, Please review the following post regarding port 25: change port 25 Thank you.

Ah, thanks. I will have to ask my host to open port 25 then. But would this also stop the sending of mail as well as receiving? I find it strange that trying to telnet to port 110 still shows up as blocked when I've opened the port in the server's firewall.

Yes, your server would need to connect to the remote mail server over port 25 to send a message. Regarding port 110, that port should be open if you want to allow your customers the ability to use POP3 in their email client to download their email messages. Note the SSL port for POP3 is 995. Thank you.

I asked the host to lift the block they had on port 25 and it's working now. Thanks
