Disk space at / running out
I received an email from my server earlier today indicating that the "/" directory mounted at "/" is getting full. It stated it's at 85% capacity (7.18 GB used of 11.62GB available). Though the server has an 80GB total limit.
I've used
du -ch --max-depth=1
to check each folder, one level at a time to see where this space was going...
I found that:
5.1GB (of the 7.18GB) was in /usr/
3.8GB (of the above 5.1) was in /usr/local/
3.1GB (of the above 3.8) was in /usr/local/cpanel/
833MB (of the above 3.8) in /usr/local/cpanel/3rdparty
1.1GB (of the above 3.1) was in /usr/local/cpanel/bin/
I rebooted the server (thinking it maybe just needed that to clean up any loose files leftover from an update) but that didn't change anything.
I've also looked at other common places (according to this post), ex:
- /usr/local/apache/logs (got back about 250MB)
- /usr/local/apache/domlogs/ (was only about 950KB so didn't bother with it)
- /usr/local/cpanel/logs (only 80MB so not super concerned about this right now)
- /usr/local/cpanel/whostmgr/docroot (didn't see a docroot folder... Saw a docs one... but it was only 12KB so really not worried there.)
And there's not much left there from them (if I cleaned out the rest I might get a total of 82 MB back).
I'm a bit hesitant to delete anything from /usr/local/cpanel/ since (according to Server Configuration -> Update Preferences) it's the staging area for cPanel updates. (Though the update preferences page in WHM shows a 7.17GB used, 22.13 available and 80GB total.)
I don't want to delete anything and have to either re-download it or risk it messing up an update for cPanel...
So then can I either clear out the section (is it safe to?) or bump up the amount of space reserved for cPanel? Or will this deal with itself?

Do you purchase VPS hosting from a VPS hosting provider? If so, I recommend reaching out to your VPS hosting provider to report the disk usage issue seen here. The output suggests the available space on the hardware node lacks the available space. Thank you.0 -

I messaged my VPS host and it was indeed an issue on their end. They made some changes and upon their request I ran df -h. Now it's showing: /dev/simfs 80G 6.6G 74G 9% / So this problem is solved. Thank you for your help. 0 -
