Backups turn off sparse files
It would appear that cPanel backups use a method of generating the account tar files that is incompatible with any Windows Zip tools (native, WinRAR, 7-Zip, PeaZip and others mentioned). According to the following post, this has been a known issue since 2014 and yet has not been fixed. Still cannot open the account backups on Windows as of the very latest version of cPanel.
[Case 111853] Unable to extract backup using 7zip
How can we solve this? How can we change the way cPanel generates the tar file so that they are compatible with Windows Zip utilities?

For anyone interested, I found that GNUWin32 is able to unpack the tar files generated by cPanel. However, I'd prefer to address the issue at source and have the archives generated in a format that is compatible with standard Zip utilities. 0 -
Hello, This was previously addressed in cPanel version 11.48: Fixed case 111853: Home Directory Backups: don't mark files as sparse. Could you open a support ticket using the link in my signature so we can review the affected accounts and determine why it's not working properly? You can post the ticket number here and we will update this thread with the outcome. Thank you. 0 -
