We're shutting down nameservers - what about active domains?

Hi, We recently bought a hosting company and have migrated every single customer from DirectAdmin to cPanel (and that was a pain in the butt on its own). What we haven't thought about before today is; what about active domains on the old company's nameservers? When the nameservers are shut down on Tuesday, the domains will no longer be online. Can we somehow migrate the nameserver to our own setup? The IP will change of course, but none of us have ever shut down/moved a nameserver so we have no idea what would really happen. Is it even possible to move the nameserver to a new IP?

  Hello, First of all you need to register 2 or 3 name servers under your hosting company domain. If you only have one server, register 2 name servers pointing to that server update the name servers at the registrar end for the domains. If you have more than one server, either create multiple name servers for each server and update name servers to the domains to the respective servers. Or make tw common name servers ( using cPanel dnsonly ) and point all domains to these name servers and cluser all your servers to these name servers. So that all your domains use the name servers even though they are hosted in different server under your infrastructure.

  Hi Suhesh, Thanks for your reply! I forgot to tell that we already have name servers and have a few thousand customers. The company we bought have hundreds of domains and we wondered if there was an easy solution to this problem so that we don't have to point every single domain to a new nameserver. We were wondering if we could someone just point ns1.domain.com from 1 IP to another and move all data to that new IP (it's a VPS that we just need to transfer). Is that actually possible?

  Do you have access to the domain name of the name servers currently using ? If yes, update the IP address of that name servers. If you have no control for the domain, then there is no other option than updating the name servers at the registrar end.

  Hello, You can login to the administrative interface at the domain registrar where the domain name associated with the name servers is registered. Most registrars include an interface that allows you to update the name server IP addresses associated with the name servers. Once you update the name server IP addresses at the registrar, you'd simply browse to "WHM >> Edit DNS Zone" and update the "A" records for your name server entries to the new IP addresses.
