Authentication failed using SFTP / FTP

Hi, I'm just setting up a new server which is to host 1 website. I've downloaded the configuration file for Filezilla, but I just keep getting "Authentication failed" when I try to connect. I've tried changing the root password, user account password, I've synced ftp passwords and restarted the server - I just cannot connect using sftp / ftp! What am I doing wrong? I've never had this problem before with cPanel servers. Any advice would be much appreciated!
