Hey there!  Does he already use cPanel?  If so, and he has root access to the server, you can use the Transfer Tool to move all the data:

    https://docs.cpanel.net/whm/transfers/transfer-tool/

If not, you'll have to manually migrate the content, and we have a guide at the following link to help with that process:

His current marketing company has a cPanel that I have access to for this retailer's website. I don't totally understand how cPanel works. Does his current marketing company need to transfer the cPanel account to me or how. I currently have access to everything in his cPanel with his current marketing company, but he wants to quit with them. Does my customer need to ask the marketing company to transfer the cPanel to me?

If he only has cPanel access, neither of you would be able to use the automated transfer option.

The best option in your case would be to use the cPanel >> Backup Wizard tool to create a full backup:

    https://docs.cpanel.net/cpanel/files/backup-wizard/

This would then be downloaded to your local workstation, and uploaded to your cPanel server where you can use it to restore the account.

So I would need to buy cPanel's monthly package, the current marketing company would do a backup, and then I would upload it to my cPanel?

Will this transfer interfere with domain and DNS info?

If you want to use cPanel, yes, you'd need a new server where you could install the software as well as purchasing the license.

Anyone with access to the existing cPanel account can create that backup, whether that is you, the client, or the host.

You will need to decide how you want to handle DNS as the transfer can't adjust that for you.

Since I am not as familiar with cPanel, is it common for people to hire others to do it for them? I'm just not sure what to even ask the current marketing company for because I'm not familiar enough with it. Once the whole thing is in my possession, I have someone outside of me manage the website, and I take care of the marketing for the company. My custom would just like everything to be with me.

It's a common request for sure. We do have a list of admins that are SafeAdmin certified here if you'd like to hire someone for that work, although we don't recommend anyone in particular:

If I hired someone to transfer all of this over to me, what would be needed from the current marketing company to accomplish this? Am I correct that the current marketing company is probably paying a monthly fee for this cPanel? cPanel charges so much a month per site?

cPanel is software that runs on a server.  It has to be installed on a fresh operating system installation, so you can't add it to an existing machine that is already being used.  There is a monthly license fee for the cPanel software, which you can find details about here:

    https://store.cpanel.net/

If you don't already have webhosting, you'll need to secure that as well.  If you are only managing one account you may find a plan that includes the cPanel fee in your monthly hosting cost.

It's really up to the needs of the website you're moving - how big it is, how much traffic, etc - and you can likely figure out most of that by examining their current plan and what they are paying for.

Okay, what is needed from the current marketing company to do this transfer if you guys did the transfer?

We aren't able to do this transfer on our end as we don't have root access to the current machine.  You shouldn't need anything from the current company to perform this work - the cPanel login is the only thing necessary.

Okay, so if I hire you guys I would provide you with the login and that's all you need from the current marketing company?

We (cPanel) are only able to perform migrations with full root access, so we wouldn't be able to help with this one on our side.  One of those admins I linked above would likely be happy to perform this work for you.
