Reverse DNS
Hi
I have been having problems with reverse dns.
All domains now resolve to correctly.
However when I check the account they work correctly but there is no forward-confirmed how do I make sure it is configured correctly.
The Hostname states forward-confirmed as YES
Any advice please.
Many Thanks

Hi,
The reverse DNS (aka the "PTR"/"in-addr.arpa" address) is usually set by the "netblock provider" - it's not something you can do within cPanel/WHM itself (as it requires access to domain name records WHM does not have).
If you contact your web hosting provider (GoDaddy in this case) asking them to set the PTR record to your server name, they should be able to do this (a good hosting provider will only do this after they have checked that the name provided actually resolves to your server: a really bad provider will just not set it up).

I am with Heart internet which is basically owned by GoDaddy and Heart internet said they can’t do it. I need to find another vps hosting company grr!

They *can* set up the reverse DNS/PTR records for you - they are just choosing not to (whether of "policy" reasons or because GoDaddy has restricted who can can do it). HeartInternet's 2015 help article on setting up the reverse DNS is still online at https://www.heartinternet.uk/support/article/how-do-i-set-up-reverse-dns-on-my-server.html .
I had no problems setting up reverse DNS records on my IPv4 address using my 20i.com server via their control panel (just saying ;) and providing a 25GBP credit for you via that referral link) - although as of August 2022 they weren't able to set PTR entries for IPv6 addresses ("I'm afraid this is not currently possible as we only support and only currently add IPv4 addresses so we will be unable to add or change IPv6 addresses. " and checking their RIPE entry shows they still haven't setup DNS servers for the reverse entries). [Oh, if you are looking for a new UK host, then I would avoid any with connections with ioMart - they've taken over quite a few "good companies" such as Memset - my old "main" host - and Bytemark - my "secondary host" and ran them practically into the ground]

Usually you need reverse dns only if you are sending emails from that particular IP address.

Hello,
The hardest part to understand about PTR records for inexperienced DNS administrators is delegation. For forward zones (i.e. domains), the domain is registered using a domain registrar, and the registrar is told to "point" the domain to a particular server. This is delegation.
In the case of reverse zones, the situation is similar, except that instead of a registrar delegating the zone, it's usually the IP address owner that creates the delegation. Or doesn't, in many cases, leaving the operator of the subnet unable to effectively create PTR records. In such cases, the operator of the subnet must rely on the controller of the reverse zone (usually an ISP) to manage the PTR records properly.
The key point is that having control over a domain and a subnet doesn't give control over the reverse zone for that subnet. It's up to whoever assigns the subnet to also assign control of the reverse zone, or decide not to do so. In the case of subnets smaller than a class C (a 24-bit subnet), RFC 2317 provides a method of delegating control of the PTR records using CNAME's.0 -
Hi
Need urgent help cannot send emails starting from this morning.
Picking up unknown server when sending emails.
host n1smtpout.europe.secureserver.net [92.204.64.1]

501 HELO requires valid address
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

Does your server have a valid hostname configured? That error would seem to indicate that your hostname is still using the default assigned by GoDaddy, which likely wouldn't be valid or have the proper rDNS settings.
Ultimately, it may be best to speak with the host about these issues.

No my server does not a valid hostname configured. They do not allow changes to the PTR record. As I have said I am with Heart Internet which is basically GO Daddy.
I am using my own nameservers which I guess are non authoritative.
I am using a fully qualified domain but again I do not have control of the PTR record.

That's just silly - I've never heard of a host not allowing you to update the rDNS. Without that in place, you're going to continue to have problems sending email to anyone that is performing even basic verification checks.

So basically the ip address 92.205.62.193. My Host will not allow me to use my own nameservers. So therefore points at GoDaddy's nameservers.

Sounds like you need a new host that actually understands email.

Due to IP ownership restrictions, we do not allow custom reverse DNS settings for our services or products at this time. There are, however, options for managing reverse DNS within our dedicated server offerings.
Which would triple what I pay now!!0 -
Just got this reply from Heart Internet
Hi Colin,Thanks for contacting us.
Yes that's correct you can set any PTR on any DED4 (dedicated server generation 4), however the:
"1 unexpected PTR value exists for this IP address:
_unknown.ip.secureserver.net"is due to an error with our PTR records, our senior teams are still investigating this and hope to have this resolved in the near future. If your mail errors are due to this, then I'd suggest that you just wait until we've fixed the PTR record, and continue to send mail using the generic host name of the server:
193.62.205.92.host.secureserver.net
as once this is fixed, then the PTR record will match the hostname, and the error that you've posted above will stop occuring.
Beggars belief this has been an issue for over 2 weeks and they never informed customers 🤬0 -
I'm sorry they didn't let you know sooner! That just seems so odd that they wouldn't give you that information immediately.

They say its fixed today.
I have ordered a new vps today with someone else with Alamalinux 8 I declined to buy cpanel from them and opted to try the free trial and then buy direct from cpanel.
This is all new to me and already stuck at
Ethernet device
You must configure your Ethernet device with a static IP address and a fully-qualified hostname. The system attempts to detect and set the Ethernet device during the installation process.
Is this on my computer or on the new server?

That would be on the server side, but I'm not familiar with the networking setup that your specific host may require. It would be best to ask them for clarification.
