Transferring (live Transfer)

Hey there!  cPanel's Transfer Tool moves everything related to a cPanel account.  This would include the DNS records setup in the zone file.

The DNS records would be modified to work properly with the new server - for example, the A record would be updated to reflect the IP address where the account is configured on the new machine.

The IP Migration Wizard is used to change the existing IP addresses of cPanel accounts already on the serer, and it not typically used as part of a migration.

There is no reason a dedicated IP address for a domain would cause an issue - the Transfer Tool works well with all types of IPs.

Let me know if that's what you're looking for!

    That certainly helps.
My host refuses to provide any support, to the point of ignoring my requests. They are my licenser for cpanel which means i can't get support directly from cpanel. This also means that I cannot update the main ip on the new server after the transfer. From my understanding, this is required, is this a true statement, do i have to rely on them to do this?

I have a 36 hours scheduled maintenance widow to do this starting Saturday the 10th at 6pm. and still have a bad feeling..
I did transfer two test accounts and that went well however; email and other stuff doesn't work yet and i understand why. but if i have to rely on my host to update dns after transfer, my clients will not be getting email until my host decides to do something..

    Thank you again,

    J

I'm sorry to hear about the lack of support from the host.  If you'd like to provide us with more detail about that, please reply to the existing ticket you have with Customer Service and we'll try and address that.

There isn't a reason you would need to update the main IP on the new server.  Most migrations just update the IP addresses of the nameservers so the DNS is routed to the new machine, so the end users don't have to adjust anything at the registrar level.  It may also not be possible to switch the new server to the old IP, as that is often dependent on the physical layout of the host's network.

based on this helpful response, thank you..
    I should do this?
    A. Finish transfer
    B. change my hostname on the server from XXX-XXX-XXX-XXX.cprapid.com to the name i want it to be
    C. Update the name server record to point to the new IP for the New Server.
    D. Wait For DNS to Propagate
    E. Force Auto SSL to Run
    F. Confirm Request are being sent to the new server.
    G. Shut Down Old Server.

Does that sound right, seems like im missing something, am i missing anything?

    Thank you again,
    J

I should also mention that my NS1 NS2 records which are one of my own domains and point to the main IP of the old server, so based on what you're saying i just have to update them to point to the IP of the New Server. This in fact removes the host from the equation -  right? maybe..

That sounds like the right process to me!

Yes, if you control the DNS *and* you own the domain you're using for the nameservers, the host doesn't have to do anything on their end.  Just update the IP address of the nameservers themselves at the registrar level and then the DNS will route to the new server.  This also effectively results in a 'zero downtime' migration as users will either reach the old machine or the new one while the DNS propagates to their location.

If you use Live Transfer, cPanel sets up redirects on the old machine to help send traffic to the new machine until the DNS change happens.
