Protected links in cpanel restrictin chromecast
Hi there,
I have hotlink protection setup in cpanel that allows access to another domain (these are 2 seperate accounts in whm) and it's working as expected - except in one case. I have a html5 player on the 'allowed' domain with chromecast enabled. It plays mp4's and displays video posters stored on the protected domain in the player correctly but won't play the mp4's in chromecast or display the video poster.
I don't know if this is a cPanel or Google chromecast issue but it appears chromecast is possibly being viewed as a different address? Non restriced mp4's play fine in chromecast.
I think cPanel need to answer this but they're not accepting tickets anymore and recommending I go through my provider, who aren't very helpful.
Any tips would be appreciated.

Hey there! I would think that Chromecast is almost certainly a separate connection that you'd need to whitelist. Can you see how it is connecting in the server logs?

Thanks for that, which server logs would I find this in? We're running this on a subdomain.

The most likely place would be the access log for the domain, which is usually found in /etc/apache2/logs/domlogs/username/ and then the specific website name you're working with.

This reveals the ip, files called and site pages but I can't see anything relating to chromecast or google.com. Also I don't get an error or anything registering when chromecast drops the connection to the video.

I'm not sure what that could be then, but it seems you've isolated it to something within Chromecast already and not anything related to cPanel.

I'm not sure about that. I've been in touch with Chromecast and they suggested adding these domains - chromecast.com, cast.google.com, googlevideo.com, google.com, gstatic.com and youtube.com but none of these helped. Does the hotlinking change the way cPanel serves the files? Is Chromecast not seeing the mp4 ie: not seeing https://mydomain.com/myvideo.mp4?

It sounds like it may be an issue with older Chromecast dongles handling protected content. Apparantly the newer ones can do it.
