Mail Forwarding - Keep Copy
Hi,
So, let's say I have a mailbox called john@test.com. And I also set up a mail forward john@test.com forwards to john@gmail.com. My assumption a received email will be delivered to the mailbox and a copy will be forwarded to the external account.
Which then these cPanel instructions makes sense:
* If a forwarder shares an address with an email account, both will receive mail.
* To stop receiving email at the account, delete it. Then, only the forwarder will receive email.
cPanel instructions say "Forwarders do not store emails on the server." I'm assuming they are referring to a mail forward without a mailbox.
But why do the cPanel instructions go on to say:
"If you wish to create a forwarding address that retains a copy of inbound email, perform the following steps:
1. Create an email account with cPanel’s Email Accounts interface (cPanel » Home » Email » Email Accounts).
2. Create an email filter with cPanel’s Email Filters interface (cPanel » Home » Email » Email Filters) that contains the following two actions:
3. Configure the Redirect to email action to send to the desired destination address.
4. Configure the Deliver to folder action to deliver to the INBOX folder."
Why do all that when you can just create a mailbox and setup a forward with the same address? Why set up filters?

Hey there! Yes, if you have forward configured and the email address exists in cPanel, it will retain a copy of the email.
I did read through that documentation page at https://docs.cpanel.net/cpanel/email/forwarders/ and it seems a bit wordy to me and confusing in this section, so I've created case DOC-20557 with our documentation team to get that adjusted. Thanks for pointing this out!
