Email forward then bounce
AnsweredI'm looking to setup a default address for a domain to forward all emails to the domain to another email address. But then I'd like the emails to bounce back saying the user doesn't exist. We are working with a domain that has a popular misspelling that we'd like to be alerted to potential emails to the mistyped domain, but to also let the sender know that the email doesn't exist. We'd like it to fail so that any lists sending to the typo address will remove it, but don't want to miss a legit potential customer email. Currently it seems the only option with default address page is forward or fail, but we can't do both. I'm hoping there might be another way to make it happen.

You should be able to create a filter, and click on the + to the right and add steps to take. For example, set the rules as necessary... then under Actions, select "Redirect to email" and enter in where you want them to end up... then click on the + to the right, and it will create a second Action underneath... for that one, select "Fail with message" and enter in "user doesn't exist" or whatever else you want to use as the error message. Then click on the + to the right of that one, and select "Stop processing rules".
When a mail arrives that matches the Rule, it will start at the top of the Actions, and work its way down. Setting it up as a Global Email Filter in cPanel will mean that, if the rule is designed properly, it will catch all variations.0 -
Thanks! That worked perfectly. I was trying email forwards and such, didn't even think about email filters.
