If you're looking for solid, privacy-friendly replacements that are still free, I’d recommend checking out Cloudflare Turnstile, hCaptcha and Friendly Captcha.

Good heads-up, and worth unpacking a couple of details in that email since the "charging" part is easy to misread.

First, the migration to a Google Cloud project is mandatory even if you stay on the free tier. If you do nothing within 45 days they auto-associate your keys, which is fine, but it does attach a Google Cloud billing account to the project — so keep an eye on that. No code changes are required either way; your existing keys keep working after migration.

Second, your own email says usage averaged 1 assessment over the past 3 months. The reCAPTCHA Standard free tier covers 10,000 assessments per month, so a small site like that would pay nothing — the charges only kick in for high-volume sites that exceed the free tier. The "soon" in the headline is really about the billing infrastructure change, not about small sites suddenly getting invoices.

That said, if you're migrating anyway and would rather reduce Google dependency, Cloudflare Turnstile is the most painless swap: free with unlimited assessments, usually no interactive puzzle for the visitor, and it follows the same form-hook pattern so the swap is small. hCaptcha is the other common free alternative and has ready-made plugins for WordPress and similar stacks.
