Yes that is true, but once you get to the point where there is not enough space for a full backup to run, that won't do anything since the backup cannot complete and pruning takes place at the end.

This is normally not advised. I would leave it on edge until release goes to 84 then switch to release. Then leave it there until stable gets to 84 and then switch to stable.

You can create backups on demand from with cpanel itself. I do not believe you can schedule these though.
