I was looking in all the wrong places. Disabling Cloudflare temporarily, as suggested in other posts, allowed AutoSSL to do its job. Thanks for stopping my obsession with the DNS record.

Tech support suggested I access the server directly instead of through a Cloudflare proxy. That cleared the issue. I suspect Cloudflare changed something in their service that triggered my challenges.
