Question
What is MariaDB, and how is it different from or similar to MySQL?
Answer
MariaDB was originally a fork of MySQL, intended as an enhanced, open-source drop-in replacement database server. cPanel currently offers installation of either MySQL or MariaDB. The current database server in cPanel is MariaDB.

Both are fundamentally similar, but there are many differences over the years. MariaDB started as a fork of MySQL, but this is no longer the case in recent versions. MariaDB has more information on its website, including compatibility and feature comparison charts.

The cPanel interface and software work the same regardless of which is installed, and the differences behind the scenes are completely transparent.
