Symptoms
You receive a notification containing the following.
CONFIG_TEXT: The filesystem “/boot” mounted at “/boot” reached “critical” status because you currently use 90% of its available blocks.
Description
By default, servers are configured to keep 5 kernels. This can result in servers with small boot partitions filling up. RHEL 7-based systems and earlier can use the package-cleanup command to remove old kernels, while RHEL 8-based systems and later can use the dnf --oldinstallonly command. Each old kernel on Ubuntu systems must be uninstalled manually.
Procedure
- Access the server's command line as the 'root' user via SSH or "Terminal" in WHM.
Run the following command depending on OS version.
CentOS / CloudLinux 7# package-cleanup --oldkernels --count=2
AlmaLinux / CloudLinux 8 and higher# dnf remove --oldinstallonly --setopt installonly_limit=2 kernel
