MariaDB/MySQL Datafile-level Compatibility
MariaDB is on the path of gradually diverging from MySQL. One obvious example is the internal data dictionary currently under development for MySQL 8.
This will be a major change to the way metadata is stored and used within the server, and MariaDB doesn"t have an equivalent feature. Implementing this feature could potentially mark the end of datafile-level compatibility between MySQL and MariaDB.
Please, what is the plan going forward for cPanel customers who are currently using MariaDB via the MySQL/MariaDB upgrade feature?
Thanks.

You probably want to wait for a better cPanel response to get a clearer picture of this. But it's my understanding that cPanel itself has moved away (or at least in the process of moving away) from depending on any MySQL/MariaDB structure for any of their internal systems (mostly moving to an sqlite3 solution). While I would probably agree that it would serve cPanel best to choose one or the other in terms of providing MySQL or MariaDB (I thought they were moving to MariaDB... but now may be moving back to MySQL?) I think the path they are going down is to provide both MariaDB and MySQL. How that will apply with interoperability, i.e. when transferring accounts from a MySQL server to a MariaDB server, I do not know. These are things that cPanel tends to not think about until some type of system has to be hurriedly put together. 0 -
Hello @MajorLancelot, We recently published a blog that includes some background information about why we decided to support MySQL 5.7: Being a Good Open Source Community Member: Why we hesitated on MySQL 5.7 | cPanel Blog Per that blog post: [QUOTE]We still see value in promoting and supporting MariaDB, so we will also retain support for MariaDB for the foreseeable future.
Feel free to review that blog post (there are a couple of comments at the bottom to review as well), and let us know if you have any additional questions. Thank you.0
