    Please read the warnings shown before the upgrade carefully and make sure that your sites will support those changes. If you upgrade to the next version then it's a direct upgrade. If you upgrade for example from MySQL 5.5 to MySQL 5.7 then first you will be moved to 5.6 and then to 5.7.

    It is not possible to upgrade from mysql 8 to mariadb. You can upgrade to mariadb from mysql 5.6 - 5.7.

    We do consider MySQL 8 to be "higher" than MariaDB, so the details @vacancy provided are important. It's not so much that the upgrade makes any changes, but it's more an issue of IF your scripts are compatible with the adjustments in the newer version. If you aren't sure, it might be worth it to consult with a professional database administrator to check your sites and database queries to ensure there aren't any issues, as MySQL downgrades are not something that are supported in cPanel.
