    I understand the key buffer size. What I do not understand is the ~8B. Usually it will give you an < or >, never seen ~ before

    That part I can't say, but I agree it usually gives a range for the values.

    ~8B means "about 8B". Haven't seen it before, though.

    Seems very strange. They are saying to adjust it about 8B Variables to adjust: key_buffer_size (~ 8B)
