GDPR and data collection
Hi all,
I'm in the process of setting up my own website as an eager amateur who wants to write games, and have hit a stumbling block in drawing up a privacy policy to comply with UK law.
The main issue is I don't know what information cPanel collects from visitors to user websites, i.e. my own.
I asked cPanel and was directed to the company's own privacy policy, which covers use of cPanel's own website and services but doesn't appear to relate to information collected by cPanel via visits to user websites. CPanel also advised me to use a third-party generic template, but I can't do that as I don't know what data it collects to include.
I'm now thinking of shopping around other hosting services to see if any can offer better clarity on this potentially legally hazardous issue.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks,
-
Hey there! I asked cPanel and was directed to the company's own privacy policy, which covers use of cPanel's own website and services but doesn't appear to relate to information collected by cPanel via visits to user websites.
That's because we don't. I don't think we're particularly interested in who visits your websites as we just are interested in data about the cPanel interface and tools themselves. We also *absolutely cannot* provide legal advice on the Forums. If you need such a document drafted, you'll have to contact a lawyer.0 -
Thanks! With what you've said in mind, it looks like I've mischaracterised the issue so please excuse me for that. I'll try to rephrase it. The screengrab of my completely anonymised visitors page might help. So, I don't actively collect visitor data. CPanel doesn't collect any of my visitor data. I can, however, access some basic visitor data such as IP address via the 'visitors' panel. Stripping away the issue of GDPR, and viewing it purely in terms of a cPanel feature, what user data do I have access to as part of my cPanel use? (I'm assuming that's the IP address, URL, what time they visited, amount of data used, and user agent, but it isn't clear if that's exhaustive.) And how long is that stored for? Thanks again, 0 -
The logs capture the same thing a standard Apache log would - time, IP address, and user agent, which typically tells us the type of browser they were using. 0 -
Thanks again, Am I right in thinking they'll be stored on the server for an amount of time as set by hosting service? (Meaning I should go to them to ask how long such data is stored for.) Very grateful for your patience with this. 0 -
Yes, they would be there as long as the logs are set to rotate. Details on that can be found here - cPanel Log Rotation Configuration | cPanel & WHM Documentation 0
