Forwarder and IMAP account issue
I have a family domain with an account for family members. My brother has a forwarder that's been working without issue for decades but in the last year or two he is not receiving emails from some commercial providers. I turned it off and set up a proper email account in cPanel for a short while to see if that would receive these emails but to no avail, so I deleted the account from the server and reverted to the forwarder. He receives emails OK as before but senders now get bounced messages as the cPanel account was deleted. Any way to fix this? He doesn't use the cPanel account as I as admin could obviously read his emails on the server.

Hey there! It sounds like the domain may still exist in /etc/localdomains or possibly /var/cpanel/userdata. If you have root access to the server you would be able to check those areas, but if you don't, you'll need to speak to your hosting provider to have them do additional troubleshooting. 0 -
I called the hosting provider and they understood the issue and the higher support people said it couldn't be fixed, which I found surprising, and said all I can do is reinstate the account in cPanel > email which is what I'm trying to avoid. They suggested I should remove the forwarder which would do nothing in my opinion, so I doubt they have the necessary skills and knowledge to investigate and fix the issue. I don't see any of those folders [/etc/localdomains or possibly /var/cpanel/userdata] and I don't have the skills to fiddle around at that level in case I break something - I've attached an image of the lower part of my account root. These are the bounces as the server says the mail account "user" - I've inserted a dummy account - no longer exists due to the account being (set up) and then deleted. The emails still get forwarded to the gmail account set up in the Forwarder panel. --------- This message was created automatically by mail delivery software. If the hosting provider isn't able to resolve the issue for you, they should submit a ticket to us so we can take a look. A support request for a cPanel issue should never end in "we can't fix this" - the problem either gets resolved, gets confirmed that things are working as intended, or we open a case with our developers to get an issue with the software fixed. I'm sorry I can't offer more on my end to you directly, but we would need root access to the system to troubleshoot the issue. 0 -
OK thanks - I've decided to reinstate the account to stop the issue. Unfortunately support is generally being dumbed down, and they'd rather tell you something can't be done than escalate it to their sysadmins. Creating an artificial barrier saves the cost of employing enough staff with high level skills. 0
