AlmaLinux9 installation on EC2 instance
Answered-
Hey there! The only supported way to get cPanel working in the AWS environment is to use our pre-packaged marketplace listing here: Launch an AWS" AMI" Instance | cPanel & WHM Documentation However, we don't have one for AlmaLinux 9 just yet, although it's something we're working towards. 0 -
Hi WHM Team, We are in a similar position, we are trying to schedule moving our servers over from Centos 7 to AlmaLinux 9 in an AWS environment. We will be spinning up new server instances and transferring accounts, so want to avoid having to do this to often, hence the AlmaLinux 9 (as active support for AlmaLinux 8 ends 1 May 2024). Do you know when you will have AlmaLinux 9 ready in AWS Marketplace? We need to plan our timelines. Many thanks, 0 -
I don't know when it will be ready, but we do have case CPANEL-43441 open for our developers to work on this. I wish I had more specific details, but at this point that's all I have. 0 -
I had the same issue with AlmaLinux 9 and installing a DNS Only server. Was fairly easy to solve, you just need to make sure you set your timezone before running the Cpanel Installer. The issue is that a symlink does not exist for: /etc/localtime and Cpanel Installer blows up when it then tries to do a SHA Digest on a non-existant file. So do this to solve: timedatectl list-timezones Find your timezone in there. Then run something like: timedatectl set-timezone America/Los_Angeles Now run the installer, for me everything works after doing that. 0 -
Is there any update on when WHM/CPanel you will have AlmaLinux 9 ready in AWS Marketplaceas AMIs? Centos 7 is EOL in June and we want to have moved in good time, we don't want to have to move to AlmaLinux 8 given it leaves mainstream support in May 2024 (granted it has security support until Mar 2029 but that's not full support).

I haven't heard anything on my end about an update happening just yet.

How do we go about getting this prioritised, AWS is one of the biggest hosting providers, what is holding back the generation of the AMIs? How do we check the status of the CPANEL-43441 case you have previously referenced?
All the best,

I reached out to the team again just now and they confirmed there is work being done on getting A9 configured as an AMI. While there is no ETA (there is *never* an ETA) we are currently hoping for a release in Q1 or possibly early Q2 of this year.

Thanks for obtaining an update, I'll touch base again in late Q1 via this thread. We want to be testing this no later than March (I expect we are not alone in this).
All the best,

Still no update for this? We need to get an instance with Alma9 provisioned in our AWS. I am going to try again since I saw somewhere that the current version of cpanel was compatible at least with Alma 9.
Crossing my fingers that I can get this installed!

callerpatty - while I still don't have an ETA, I can confirm the devs are working on that image right now. If I had to guess, and it is a guess, it'll debut sometime in March.

Morning,
We are now seeing an AlmaLinux 9 WHM AMI listed against the cPanel account in AWS marketplace (https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/seller-profile?id=0cd0aa0a-daa0-4b57-9bc5-dfffec41e1da) - does this mean we have an official AlmaLinux 9 WHM AMI now?
All the best,

Yes, it was just released early this morning!

Could I ask if there's any plan to bring it to AWS Lightsail and if so, when?

jaxtheking - Short answer - no.
Long answer - Lightsail is a bit different. There is no way for us to provide them with an image to use inside Lightsail - THEY choose what gets offered there, and they are very strict about what they offer. They look for the most used images, do a bunch of internal testing, and ultimately copy over an EC2 image to use there. It's really not up to us as much as people think.

I can imagine how strict they are.
I've already happy the cPanel image on AlmaLinux 8 is available there, but since I'm rebuilding the server now it seemed a shame to pass on the opportunity to upgrade to AlmaLinux 9 directly.
Can you confirm there is no Elevate for AL 8 to 9?You may want to get the team to update the status of this in the roadmap then:
Many thanks

There is no ELevate for version 9 of anything at this time.
We may still be working on things internally for Lightsail, so it's likely fine to leave that as "in progress" so we can switch it to "published" once it's complete.
