How do they find you

Can anyone explain how hackers can stumble across a server. Mines been up no more than 3 or 4 weeks. I've not advertised it, it has a single domain that's never been submitted to google. So how the heck have these potential hackers and spam merchants found it and attempt to compromise it so quick ?

  Many, if not most, hacking attempts are done by automated scripts that run on systems that are themselves hacked, which form something called a "botnet". The scripts on the infected servers go through a range of IP addresses, sequentially, the same as if you were to dial numbers on a phone, incrementing the number by 1 each time. Your server is probably not a particular target, but simply has an IP address that happens to be in the range that some botnet is working on this week. Such hacking attempts are a sad fact of life on the modern Internet, and brute-force (password guessing) attempts are common, as well as attempts to exploit vulnerable URLs. The instant a server goes online, it is accessible on the Internet. It is never necessary to advertise it, for it to be found by hackers. It will eventually be found, when the IP address range that contains the server's IP address(es) is gone through by a malicious script on an infected server somewhere in the world.

  Lock it down, keep everything up to date. Learn as much as you can, and keep moving. It's not as bad as it sounds, but could be far worse if you're too busy to keep up. The good news is, it's worth your time and very enjoyable to be a part of once you get going proper. :)
