Server Spam Issue

I assume you mean incoming spam ? In my opinion, there isn't a great deal you can do to stop it entirely, only slow it down. Ensure Spam Assassin is configured and working, and fine tune it. Make it a little aggressive and start creating custom rules. Or subscribe to a spam filtering service, but these cost money, some spam still gets through and legitimate email can get blocked. One other thing you could do, which will halt it for a while, is migrate email addresses to something a little more difficult to guess. Instead of info@ sales@ john@ jane@, have users migrate to addresses like john.smith@ jane.jones@ And set an auto responder for john@ etc saying "This mailbox no longer exists, please call me on xxxxx xxxxx" Customer will eventually get the message. This is currently working for us

Hey efuzone, Two of my suggestions from WHM are : 1. Enable the RBL option from WHM, which will check each of the IPs that is attempting to send mails to your server and if the IP is in the RBL list, it will automatically block the mails. This option can be found from WHM as follows : Home "Service Configuration "Exim Configuration Manager>> RBLs>>Manage Custom RBLs You can enable the in-build lists or add your RBL lists from above. 2. Enable the setting to Reject SPF/DKIM failures, which will reject emails from domain names without valid SPF/DKIM records. You can enable this option from : WHM " Service Configuration " Exim Configuration Manager>>ACL These two tweaks are seen as very effective when it comes to reject unwanted spams from hitting the server !

Hello :) Yes, as mentioned in the previous post, the best way to prevent SPAM is to enable some of the options available to you in the Exim Configuration Manager. You can find this documented at: Exim Configuration Manager - Basic Configuration Thank you.

One fundamental flaw with RBL is currently what we are suffering and hence the reason i'm migrating to our own server. We share our current host/IP, with a bunch of people who either don't care or don't know. Every week the IP is blacklisted on RBL because either someone on the server sent lots of spam or was compromised. We run a legitimate business and can't send emails because of RBL.

Hey keat63, The RBL's option found to prevent spam from hitting your server wont affect your outgoing emails. What this basically checks for is, the originating IP of the incoming mails to your server, if those IP's are listed in the spamdb's, the mails get rejected. It shouldn affect your outgoing mails.

Howdy Keat63, Shared IP addresses are the reason I moved from shared hosting to a VPS several years ago. You get your own IP addresses and nameservers. I too was being blacklisted for spam that my clients did not produce. Now I know if and where it comes from and can notify the user and hopefully help them remove the virus/malware causing the problem. Google also lists your sites higher if they see you have a dedicated IP. Good Luck to you!
