Change e-mail address but keep saved messages

Is there a way to change the e-mail address but keep the old e-mails? What I would like to do is go into the mail folder and change the name of the folder from email@domain.com to email.bak@domain.com. I no longer want the address (future emails should bounce), but I want to keep the messages.

  Hello :) You could simply setup a user-level filter that bounces all email sent to this account: cPanel - User Level Filters Thank you.

  Where are the messages at the moment? In an IMAP account or on an end users PC ?

  Hi, Thanks for the replies. The messages are currently in an IMAP account. The filter idea may work.

  You can even save the email data through a folder in cpanel /home/username/mail/domain.com/email-account-username. This might work.

  Ff they are in an IMAP account, then this has worked for me numerous times. It's a little long winded but works. Create the new email account. Configure your email client to use both accounts. Within your email client, drag and drop from one account to the other. Close the old account.
