email address files in root folder

I just stumbled over what looks like a host of email address files in the root folder. I recognise most of these email addresses as customers of ours, but i'm confused they would be there. They all have zero bytes file size and quite a number of them have the same time stamp. Any ideas what they are, and why they are there ?

  Do you recall what work you were up to on Feb 26? Going by your forum history, you were very active on the forums the week of the 26th. You might review those old comments to see if you get any clues as to what you were doing on Feb 26.

  I like your way of thinking, but alas, it gives no clues. I think i'm just going to delete them (or paste elsewhere temporarily) and see what happens.

  They shouldn't be there, period. Moving out of the way to a backup directory should be fine.
