Has anyone been able to do a MX record to gmail?

    You would have to sign up for Google Apps for that domain name, which I don't believe is free any more.

    Yes .. Google apps are charging $5/m for a single email address now, however you can create alias for the email ID so that may do the trick for you.

    Thanks, yeah I saw the $5 charge. So for the email to work with Google Apps but stay with our hosting, you would redirect the MX record to them?

    You can't set MX records to a host if that host is not configured to handle mail for that domain. Well, I suppose technically you can set the MX records for a domain name to anything. Expecting it to work is an entirely different thing. Google's servers have to be configured to handle mail for your domain name. That's what signing up for Google Apps for your domain name does.

    Thanks, yeah I know that. I'm trying to understand how to make the domain work with google apps assuming the account at Google apps is already set up. I'm guessing you redirect the MX record once the Google apps account is set up and configured?

    They should give you instructions for how to set your MX records after you sign up. I think you also have to make some DNS changes to verify domain ownership.
