Create a bounce for bad domain?

Hey there!  If the domain no longer exists on the server you can use the cPanel >> Default Address function to reject messages that don't point to an existing address.  Choosing the "Discard the email while your server processes it by SMTP time with an error message" option will send that rejection message you want, and there is even a text field there where you can customize that bounce message.

The defunct domain belongs to a local ISP, cableone.net which changed their email domains to sparklight.com and rather than forward them, they just don't accept them any longer, so they sit on my server.

In that case, figure out who is forwarding emails to an @cableone.net email address and instruct them to correct their forwarder to forward to a proper address.

    No one is forwarding.

This insurance office has thousands of customers with cableone.net addresses still in the system.  They've been instructed/informed/etc that these addresses are all dead, but they still slip through.

So that's what I'm trying to do is help remind them to update the address every time one comes in.

So you have a client with a cPanel account (ex:  ins-client.com).   They have a lot of clients with @cableone.net addresses that they are still sending emails to, using your server to send those emails to @cableone.net users?   Is that right?

In that case, what cPRex suggested isn't going to work, since cableone.net is not (and should not be) a domain on your server.  You won't be able to just go in and do anything with the default address.

You are going to have to set up some sort of filtering elsewhere in the email chain to block the insurance company from sending emails to @cableone.net, to bounce those emails back to the insurance company.

Yes. Exactly.  I'm thinking perhaps a MailScanner rule? But I can't see how to bounce that way... unless I just send all messages to a single person and let them deal with it...
