WordPress and DNS
I am seeing a very strange issue with WordPress sites and cPanel DNS servers. The sites for the most part work great… except the some mobile users cannot get to the site at all. It appears to be mostly android users. In my testing I have found that using the Cloudflare DNS servers fixes the issue. Has anyone seen anything like this? It is quite odd that it is only WordPress sites. There are other non-WordPress sites on the same platform that don’t have this issue. Thanks in advance for your input here.

Maybe a plugin causes this?

I don't have a good explanation for this on my end. It would be good to know what error the users receive, and if there is anything showing up in the Apache error log (/etc/apache2/logs/error_log) when the problem happens.

They cannot connect to the site so the only error they see is site not available.

Right, but this is something you'd be checking in the logs on the server as the root user, in the hopes that it would show additional details about what the error may be. If the issue is truly a DNS problem though, there wouldn't be any logs there at all.
Do you see anything odd with the DNS configuration when you scan it with a tool like intodns.com?

I've used WireShark to try to capture the traffic and never caught one packet. I don't think it is ever hitting the server to gen any logs. Don't see any issues with the DNS. Works great for everyone else.

I don't have a good explanation on my end - if they aren't reaching the server at all, the issue can't be related to cPanel and must be something in Cloudflare or DNS.

That was my initial take on the matter.. what's the difference between Cloudflare DNS servers and the cPanel DNS servers? It works with the Cloudflare DNS servers but not with the cPanel DNS servers.

In theory, there shouldn't be any difference - they all serve zones the same way. If there *is* something wrong with the DNS servers, I'd expect that online tool to show it.
What happens to DNS queries when you're using the cPanel servers? Do they all work normally when you try a manual query?

I didn't see any issues with the DNS testing tools. Do you have a specific one that you use I should look at?

I personally like intodns.com as that checks the nameservers at the registrar.

Ok I captured a report from intodns.com using the Cloudflare DNS servers. I will switch the DNS servers back to the cPanel servers, wait for propagation and run the test again.
