Google Drive is Not Working as an Additional Backup Destination
Hi
The other day there was a huge data outage in my data center and I could not access my server or its local backups. Hence, I decided to use Google Drive as a destination and I purchased 2 TB of additional storage space. My Cpanel server takes local incremental backups of my accounts every Sunday.
This week I added Google Drive as an Additional destination. I followed the instructions in "https://docs.cpanel.net/knowledge-base/backup/how-to-configure-google-drive-as-a-backup-additional-destination/" to create it as a backup destination and when I press validate it works and gives the message "Success: The validation for the “GdriveBackup” destination succeeded."
However, the server did the normal incremental backup locally to its disk but it did not even initiate the backup to Google Drive nor did it give any errors. Can you let me know if there is something that I need to enable in Cpanel for it to start this (its already showing as validated in additional destinations tab). I checked my Google Drive as well and it shows zero files have been copied.
Regards.
Steve

Hey there! The best area to check when this happens is the /usr/local/cpanel/logs/cpbackup_transporter directory, as that will show the attempt to transfer the files to the remote destination. Can you look there to see if there are any helpful details?

Hi
Unfortunately no details are there, its pretty much empty with repetitive lines, please see below. Its as if the backup to remote destination never started, but the destination verifies. Is there some setting in Cpanel to forcefully start it

Thanks for the additional details. Just to confirm, the additional destination does show up in WHM >> Backup Configuration *and* you can see that in the "Validation Results" tab, correct?
If so, you can try manually running the backup with this command while watching that transporter log in real-time:
/usr/local/cpanel/bin/backup --force

Thanks for the fast reply. Please see the screenshot that shows the additional destination and the validation. I will attempt to run the backup again with the command that you gave, hope it shows something.

In that screenshot the status says "disabled" - do you see anything odd in the main Backup Settings tab about the remote options?

Hi, is there a button to click to make it enabled, I cant find any. Here is the screenshot of the main backup settings. Is there something that I need to change there.

No, that all looks good.
The system can disable the backup to speed up the process if there are authentication errors. Do you see any output from this command?
grep -R "Disabling remote backup" /usr/local/cpanel/logs/cpbackup_transporter/

This is what I get if I run the above command
[root@server ~]# grep -R "Disabling remote backup" /usr/local/cpanel/logs/cpbackup_transporter/
[root@server ~]#
[root@server ~]# 0
-bash: 0: command not found

I'm not sure what would cause it to be disabled - can you re-validate the destination? Does that change the status?
0 -
ok that enabled it. I will now try to rerun the backup and see if it works

Hi, I ran the manual backup command after enabling it and it only backuped the system files and not the account files. You can see it in the screenshots. I am also attaching the last parts of the log. Is there some setting that I need to do so that it also backs up each account on the server (The normal backup works fine and backs up the accoıunt, this issue is only for additional backup to Google Dirve). Thanl you for your assistance.

On the main WHM >> Backup Configuration page, do you have the "Backup User Accounts" option checked?
0 -
Yes I have it checked. Please see the screenshot.
0 -
Just to be extra sure, can you click the "Select Users" box next to it and ensure they are all included?
If that isn't the issue, it's likely time to create a ticket so we can take a look.
0 -
Yes they are included. The backup operation inside the server backed up all the included accounts. It is only the additional backup (Google Drive) that only backed up the system settings and not the accounts. Kindly suggest.

I'm out of any ideas that could be handled through a Forum - either our team or your host will need to check the server.

Its a self managed server so I don't have any option to get support from host and though they sold me the server and cpanel, they don't provide support as per their service agreement. I have checked all Cpanel documentation as much as I am able. Please do let me know the link where I can get support from Cpanel to look into the server settings, Because as far as I can see I have done everything as per the documentation.

If your license is purchased directly from us you would be able to reach out to our team for support.

Unfortunately its through Velia.Net and when I purchased the Cpanel license for my dedicated server several years ago, there was no such division between the licenses. All of a sudden in 2024 Cpanel created a division of license from Cpanel and from others. And my dedicated server and Cpanel provider doesn't provide support.
Kindly suggest the way forward.

Those are the two best options - contact your host for support, or purchase the license through us.

I cant change the license because the host is saying that we have to format the server completely and then give it to you if you want to purchase Cpanel directly from Cpanel as they say license is not transferable.
Anyhow, I will try to find some outside support, though one person who looked at it from an IT company today said that this is a Cpanel bug for this particular operating system, due to a faulty design. He suggested the OS needs to be changed for Cpanel to work properly (I have Alma Linux)
However, thank you for your support. You have patiently tried to help me and answered all of my questions. I am grateful. Have a nice day. Regards.

The cPanel license isn't transferable, but there is no reason you need to reformat the machine. You would just cancel the current license, purchase a new one, and run the "/usr/local/cpanel/cpkeyclt" command to update the license on the server.

I will try to talk to my dedicated server host to see if they accept this solution.

I don't think it's something they have to accept or not - you're free to do whatever you'd like with your server, especially if it's a dedicated system.
