DNS delegation for a subdomain
AnsweredHello,
We previously hosted DNS for our primary domain on different (not cPanel) name servers. We are retiring those servers, so this morning I moved all of our DNS records to our cPanel cluster and updated the registrar. That part worked as planned, but I have a subdomain for our staging sites (I'll call it staging.mydomain.tld) that is separate from our DNS cluster and has bind running on it so it manages its own DNS zones. We had delegated DNS control for the staging subdomain to our staging server on our old name servers and it worked perfectly. Now, after moving the zone to cPanel none of the *.staging.mydomain.tld domains are resolving. Doing `dig staging.mydomain.tld NS +short` returns the correct server, and doing `dig @staging_server domain1.staging.mydomain.tld A +short` returns the correct IP address. In the zone file for our primary domain (mydomain.tld) on the cPanel cluster I have an A record for our staging server that is running bind and I have an NS record for staging.mydomain.tld that points to the staging server. I followed all the steps in this cPanel support article, however it's still not working. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hey there! It sounds like you've done everything correctly since the A records and NS records are responding as expected, so it would be best to create a ticket so we could check this in real-time on the servers affected.

Thanks for checking in cPRex. It turns out that there was a zone file for the subdomain on the cPanel cluster somehow. The serial showed it was from 2 years ago, so probably the result of some testing we did back then that wasn't cleaned up. When I deleted the zone from the cluster it all started working.

I'm glad you found a good resolution!
