DNS setup for WHM/cPanel

  • cPRex Jurassic Moderator

Hey there!  It really depends what features you want to take advantage of, but I would say you HAVE to have the following records:

"A" record for the hostname: this may or may not be the same as a domain you are using for the website, but the hostname of the server has to respond in DNS in order for the WHM access to be secure.

"A" record for your individual domains: this is required to get your websites working

    "A" record any subdomains

Anything other than those are up to you and your specific needs.

In general, I think it's easier to manage the DNS locally by creating custom nameservers - that way, any domains you create automatically get the DNS configured on the server for you, so you don't need to manually enter the data in a third party:

    Hey cPRex,

thanks four your response. My main question was about the subdomains used by WHM itself.
Let’s say points to my server and is used by WHM/cPanel. There is a corresponding DNS zone in the panel which also has subdomains like Do I have to set an A record for them in my DNS of my registrar or do I just set a NS record for * to point to my cPanel installation?

Do you plan to use those subdomains for anything?  If not, you8 don't need them at all.

If you wanted to use them you would need to create that A record, or create custom nameservers.  Creating an NS record is *not* the same as creating custom nameservers.
