HANG: ⚠: chkservd on GoDaddy VPS but CPU and Ram is fine
Hi,
I have a GoDaddy VPS, which is only a couple of months old and is running AlmaLinux v8.10.0 and cPanel & WHM v120.0.10 (STANDARD). I regularly run all the OS and WHM/cPanel updates and do the reboots to check i'm running the latest versions of everything.
Man I dont know if its just crappy GoDaddy, but this sever is so unstable, considering its a fresh build of just a couple of months old and is only hosting 3 tiny cPanel accounts doing hardly anything on it. It's CPU just averages 5% all the time, and its RAM at 65% all the time.
Services just hang and then get recovered a few times a weeks, for no apparent reason. Why, why, why?? For an example, HANG: ⚠: chkservd is a real popular one, at LEAST once a week I get this one.
The chkservd process has become non-responsive. |

Any Help appreciated.

Hey there! Besides the preview content, was there anything helpful shown in the /var/log/chkservd.log log file?

Hi, Thanks for responding.
The only errors I see in the log are just it ending and restarting a few services. Here is the log I grabbed today: chkservd-14,6,24.log
You can see the alerts and date/time stamps over the last week, of all the weird and totally under stressed things this GoDaddy VPS reports on. Its not just the chkserd process

Well that's fun - so *everything* is failing. Are you the licenseholder so you can submit a support ticket to us and have us take a look?

Hi,
Unfortunately not, it says my servers IP is licensed to godaddy and to seek support from them.
Everytime I call them, they say as it's a VPC, your on your own, no support. Useless :(Hence I'm on here looking for any help please.

It feels a bit unfair actually because Im stuck in the middle of having no support, because if I look at my goDaddy invoice cost, there is one line for the cost of the vpc hosting and another for the cost of a cpanel licence. So really? I should be entitled to cpanel. Official support, if you see my line of thinking.

I definitely understand the frustration. License resellers should be offering some level of support as part of the perk of reselling cPanel, but some are better than others.
You can always email cs@cpanel.net to let them know about the support experience with your host.
As far as the server issues, it really could be anything - since the failures seem random I was especially interested to see if the host had any details they could provide from the parent, but it sounds like that isn't going to be an option.
Do you see anything interesting in /var/log/messages or /usr/local/cpanel/logs/error_log when these issues happen?

Thankyou, on your advice I have emailed cs@cpanel.net to let them know about the complete refusal of support from GoDaddy, despite me being charged for a cpanel license.
Regarding the last issue, the server has reported, i've pasted it below. and here is the /var/log/messages file from that day the issue occurred, I cant find anything strange: messages-20240616.txt
and here is the /usr/local/cpanel/logs/error_log cpanel error_log-20240616.txt
it seems to have lots of occurrences of the word 'error' in it
Thanks again for your help. The chkservd subprocess with PID “473678” ran for “12 minutes and 15 seconds”. The system terminated this sub-process when it exceeded the time allowed between checks, which is “5 minutes”. To determine why, check the “ /var/log/chkservd.log ” and “ /usr/local/cpanel/logs/tailwatchd_log ” files.
You likely received this notification as a symptom of a larger problem. If your server is experiencing a high load, we recommend that you investigate the cause. If you continue to receive this notification, it is likely that your system is unable to handle demand or there is a misconfiguration that delays restarts.
If you are sure that no misconfigurations exist, you should consider gradually increasing the following options in WHM’s “Tweak Settings” feature: “The number of times ChkServd allows a previous check to complete before termination”, “The number of seconds between chkservd service checks”, or both. I do agree that all looks normal.
Another option for you would be to cancel your existing license and purchase your license directly from the cPanel Store, as you would then be able to submit a ticket directly to us.
