Backup /home/$user/mail independently
Hello cPRex, I have a plan I need to run by you:
The plan is to backup the hundreds of gigs the /home/$user/mail directories of my IMAP users independently of cpanel backups, basically I'm running a rsync of that directory daily to a remote server (and to a second disk on the same server) and then a rsnapshot on those destinations for 10 days (the same number of days I save CPanel backups). My aim is to have the account backup files as small as possible in order to make it feasible to also move them off server since right now they are above 500GB, some 90% of that are old emails that never get read.
Well, anyway, my plan is to add the /home/$user/mail dir to the cpbackup-exclude.conf file.
In case of disaster my plan is to recover the account from cpanel backups and then rsync the mail folder.
I've been forced to recover the mail directory in the past due to data corruption, a big one, more than 50GB of mail, and was surprised on how well it went.
So, i guess my question is, am I on the right track here?
Thank you!

Hey hey! This will work just fine - the actual email account data is stored in /home/username/etc so the mailboxes will be recreated and then you could sync from your custom backup. A lot of people have done similar things over the years with good results.
